A documentary family session through the streets of Merewether, Newcastle
Some stories deserve to be walked.
For the Butcher family, an ordinary afternoon became something quietly extraordinary — retracing the steps of a life built together, with their two little ones leading the charge along the way.
It started out front of the building where mum and dad first called home. The place where it all began. From there, skateboards hit the pavement and the kids did what kids do best — made every single moment their own — as the family rolled and wandered their way down to Merewether Beach.
And at the end of that walk? The very spot where dad once got down on one knee.
The kids didn't know that part. They were too busy running full tilt into the sand, laughing until there was nothing left to do but jump into the ocean — clothes and all.
That's the thing about documentary family photography. It doesn't manufacture magic. It just shows up on the days when magic is already happening.
